Thick Plate Cutting Guide
Thick Plate Carbon Steel Laser Cutting: Matching Laser Power to 20-50mm Plate
For 20-50mm carbon steel, the practical fiber laser tiers are 12000W (cuts to 35mm), 15000W (to 40mm) and 30000W (to 70mm) — oxygen assist is the standard gas for carbon steel at these thicknesses.
Why Thick Plate Needs a Different Machine Class
Above roughly 20mm, plasma and oxy-fuel were the traditional routes: the 12000W model is positioned as a direct replacement for plasma on heavy structural steel, producing narrower kerf, vertical clean edges and a smaller heat-affected zone that removes secondary grinding on most jobs. At 30kW, the beam replaces oxy-fuel, plasma and abrasive waterjet across the full thickness spectrum for mills and heavy fabricators.
Power-to-Thickness Table
Verified cutting capacity per power tier, taken from each machine specification page.
| Laser Power | Max Carbon Steel | Max Stainless | Max Aluminum | Working Area | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12000W | 35mm | 20mm | 16mm | 2000×6000mm | ±0.05mm / ±0.03mm repeatability |
| 15000W | 40mm | 25mm | 20mm | 2000×6000mm | ±0.05mm |
| 30000W | 70mm | 40mm | 30mm | 2000×6000mm | ±0.05mm / ±0.03mm repeatability, 30 bar gas rated |
Selection Logic
Purchasing judgment based on verified power-to-thickness data — general reference.
- 1
20-35mm daily mainstream → 12000W
The lowest tier entering heavy-industry territory, with IPG/RAYCUS laser source and a heavy-duty stress-relieved gantry.
- 2
35-40mm regularly, or stainless up to 25mm → 15000W
Bridges the 12kW-20kW gap on the same 2000×6000mm bed.
- 3
40mm+ up to 50mm standard work → 30000W
Single-pass cutting to 70mm carbon steel, with headroom that improves edge quality and speed on thicknesses near lower tiers' limits.
- 4
Continuous production → 12000W exchange-table variant
Dual shuttle with table exchange under 60 s and a 30-40% throughput increase, as stated on that product page — the same 35mm capability applied to shift-based output.
Assist Gas on Thick Carbon Steel
Oxygen (O2) for carbon steel up to 35mm as the typical exothermic cutting gas; high-purity nitrogen reserved for stainless and aluminum. Gas supply sizing, including on-site PSA nitrogen, is covered on the assist-gas guide below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a fiber laser cut 50mm carbon steel in one pass?
The 30000W cuts carbon steel up to 70mm in a single pass, covering 50mm with margin; the 15000W tops out at 40mm. The 30000W page also notes 20kW-class systems reach 50mm — confirm the exact tier against your thickness mix.
Oxygen or nitrogen for thick carbon steel?
Oxygen is the standard assist gas for carbon steel at these thicknesses; nitrogen is for stainless and aluminum. The 12000W supports automatic N2/O2 gas switching.
What accuracy is held on 70mm plate?
The 30000W spec states ±0.05mm positioning and ±0.03mm repeatability maintained even on 70mm plate, on a dual-servo helical-rack gantry.
Do I need a bigger bed for thick plate?
The 12000W, 15000W and 30000W all use the 2000×6000mm extended bed designed for high-mass plate handling.
What infrastructure does a 12000W+ machine need?
380V/50Hz three-phase supply, industrial water chilling (dual-temperature on 12kW, triple-circuit on 30kW) and an assist gas supply; full facility requirements ship with the technical documentation.
