Power Selection Guide
High-Power Fiber Laser Cutting Machines: How to Choose Between 2000W and 30000W
The right laser power is set by the thickest carbon steel you cut daily — 2000W covers 8mm, 6000W covers 20mm, and 30000W covers 70mm. This guide maps each Xinhong power tier to its verified cutting capacity so you can match the machine to your plate, not to a spec sheet.
Power-to-Thickness Selection Table
Verified cutting capacity per power tier, taken from each machine specification page.
| Power | Max Carbon Steel | Max Stainless | Max Aluminum | Working Area | Positioning / Repeatability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2000W | 8mm | 5mm | 4mm | 1500×3000mm | ±0.03 / ±0.02mm |
| 3000W | 12mm | 8mm | reduced range | 1500×3000mm | ±0.05mm |
| 6000W | 20mm | 14mm | reduced range | 2000×4000mm | ±0.05mm repeatability |
| 12000W | 35mm | 20mm | 16mm | 2000×6000mm | ±0.05 / ±0.03mm |
| 15000W | 40mm | 25mm | 20mm | 2000×6000mm | ±0.05 / ±0.03mm |
| 20000W | 50mm | 30mm | 25mm | 2000×6000mm | ±0.05 / ±0.03mm |
| 30000W | 70mm | 40mm | 30mm | 2000×6000mm | ±0.05 / ±0.03mm |
How to Choose Your Power Tier
- 1
Let your daily plate thickness decide, not peak demand.
A shop cutting 6-8mm sheet five days a week gains little from 12kW; a fabricator routinely processing 20mm structural plate will hit the ceiling of a 3kW machine on every nest. Choose the tier whose verified carbon steel maximum sits at or above your thickest routine job — with headroom of one thickness step if your order mix is shifting upward.
- 2
Match the bed to your material format.
1500×3000mm covers standard mill sheets. 2000×4000mm accommodates oversized structural components in a single setup. 2000×6000mm handles full-length plates without pre-cutting — the standard choice for shipyard and heavy fabrication work.
- 3
Check your electrical and cooling infrastructure early.
The 3000W model runs on 220V single-phase power with air cooling — no dedicated three-phase installation or chiller unit. From 2000W cutting systems upward with water-cooled configurations, plan for 380V three-phase supply; 12kW and above use dual-circuit industrial chillers, and the 30000W flagship uses a triple-circuit chiller with dedicated cooling for laser, optics, and cutting head.
- 4
Plan assist gas with the machine, not after it.
Carbon steel up to 40mm is typically cut with oxygen for exothermic speed. Stainless steel and aluminum require high-purity nitrogen (≥99.99%) for bright, oxide-free edges — and thick-section stainless cutting needs high gas pressure: 25 bar on the 15000W/20000W platforms, 30 bar on the 30000W and the marine-engineering 20000W configuration. A PSA nitrogen generator (99.9% purity, 10-80 m³/h) supports on-site nitrogen production instead of bottled supply.
What Fiber Laser Cutting Replaces
Product pages across the lineup state the same replacement logic at different thickness ranges: on 12kW, the fiber beam produces vertical, clean edges on 35mm carbon steel where plasma leaves dross and beveled edges requiring grinding; on 20kW, it replaces oxy-fuel on 30-50mm plate, eliminating scale and wide kerf; on 30kW, it consolidates oxy-fuel, plasma, and abrasive waterjet work into one system for ultra-thick plate. The shared mechanism is a narrower kerf and smaller heat-affected zone, which reduces secondary finishing before welding.
Applications by Segment
Typical application examples.
Sheet metal and job shops (2000W-3000W)
Enclosures, chassis parts, kitchen equipment, electrical cabinets, signage — where exchange tables and nesting software drive material utilization.
Structural and contract fabrication (6000W-12000W)
Machinery frames, elevator components, structural brackets, pressure vessel sections on 14-35mm plate.
Heavy industry and steel service centers (15000W-30000W)
Bridge and infrastructure steel, wind tower sections, mining equipment, armor plate — including 40-70mm single-pass cutting.
Marine engineering (20000W marine configuration)
Shipyard hull plates and offshore structures, with 30 bar nitrogen cutting for duplex stainless steel up to 25mm.
Frequently Asked Questions
What power cuts 20mm carbon steel?
A 6000W machine is rated for 20mm carbon steel and 14mm stainless steel. If 20mm is your occasional maximum rather than daily work, 6000W is the correct tier; if you routinely cut 25mm and above, step up to the 12kW class.
Can one machine handle carbon steel, stainless, and aluminum?
Yes across the lineup, with different maxima per material — for example, the 12000W cuts 35mm carbon steel, 20mm stainless, and 16mm aluminum. Assist gas switches between oxygen and nitrogen between jobs.
What electrical supply do the machines need?
The 3000W model operates on 220V single-phase with air cooling. Larger tiers run on 380V three-phase; 12kW and above include dual- or triple-circuit industrial water chillers. Full facility requirements are documented with each machine.
Do I need a nitrogen generator?
For stainless and aluminum work, high-purity nitrogen is required for oxide-free edges. Thick-section stainless cutting at 25-30 bar consumes significant gas volume; a PSA generator (99.9% purity, 10-80 m³/h) produces nitrogen on site instead of relying on bottled supply.
Are the machines certified for European operation?
Xinhong fiber laser cutting machines are CE certified for European industrial safety compliance, with Schneider Electric control components (Modicon M241 PLC, CE/UL certified) across the high-power lineup.
