PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) is the gating documentation for automotive Tier-2 CNC vendors. Get the package right and you're approved in one round; get it wrong and you're chasing 18 separate corrections through 4 weeks of email. Here's what the buyer actually checks.

The 18 documents

Design records, engineering change documents, customer engineering approval, design FMEA, process flow diagram, process FMEA, control plan, MSA studies, dimensional results, material/performance test results, initial process studies (Cpk), qualified lab documentation, appearance approval, sample production parts, master sample, checking aids, customer-specific requirements, PSW (Part Submission Warrant).

Top-3 rejection reasons

1. Cpk < 1.67 on dimension-critical features. The buyer wants ≥1.67 on diameter and length tolerances; we run process-capability studies on 30+ piece samples before submitting.

2. Material certificate not traceable to bar-stock heat number. PPAP requires the material's heat number to flow from raw bar through every machining op into the finished-part packaging.

3. CMM report missing GD&T evaluation. Standard dimensional reports check positional features but not GD&T (form, profile, runout). When the drawing has GD&T callouts, the report must evaluate them — Zeiss Calypso software does this natively.

Cavitation is the silent killer of process pumps — it produces the characteristic gravel-in-the-impeller sound, eats the impeller in 6-12 months, and causes 35% of unplanned plant downtime per IChemE statistics. The vast majority of cavitation failures are specification errors that could have been caught at procurement. Here's the math.

NPSH-required (NPSHr)

The pump curve shows NPSHr at each flow rate — the minimum suction-side absolute pressure the pump needs to operate without cavitation. NPSHr rises with flow rate: a pump's NPSHr at duty point might be 4m, but at runout (max flow) might be 8m.

NPSH-available (NPSHa)

The available net positive suction head, calculated from your suction-side piping: NPSHa = atmospheric pressure + static suction head − vapor pressure − friction losses. For a closed-loop system pumping hot water from a degassing tank, NPSHa might be only 2-3m.

The procurement rule

NPSHa > NPSHr + 1m safety margin at the duty point. Less than 1m margin and any process upset (loss of suction, hot day, fouled strainer) tips into cavitation. We do an NPSH calc on every pump quote, and we won't ship a pump where the buyer's stated NPSHa is too low. Saves both of us a 6-month replacement job.

Fugitive emission certification has gone from a nice-to-have to a hard requirement on pipeline and refinery procurements in the EU + most modern US specs. ISO 15848-1 is the testing standard; Class A is the strictest leak-rate band. If your buyer doesn't know to ask for it, the project commissioning auditor will reject the valves.

The test method

The valve is mounted in a sealed test enclosure, pressurized to design pressure with helium tracer gas, and cycled through 1,500 mechanical cycles + 5 thermal cycles. Stem leakage and body-bonnet leakage are measured continuously. Class A: <50 ppmv leak rate. Class B: <100 ppmv. Class C: <500 ppmv.

Why it matters

EU Industrial Emissions Directive + US EPA Method 21 both require quantifiable upper bounds on fugitive emissions from pipeline / refinery valve packing. Old graphite-packed valves can't meet Class A — they need to be PEEK-encapsulated or live-loaded.

Procurement specification

Required clause for any new procurement: "Fugitive emission tested per ISO 15848-1 Class A, helium method, with witnessed test certificate." Every monogrammed API 6D pipeline valve we ship comes with this cert in the documentation package.
